12/1/2017 ~ 1:30pm A SB driver 19th Ave near Broadway, Phoenix while speeding and illegally passing vehicles (i.e. driving SB in NB lanes), lost control and drove up on the sidewalk, killing 13 y.o. Cordell Gooch

Police say there were “early indications that the driver showed signs of impairment”

Criminal Case

Driver 17 y.o. Eduardo Lopez Tenorio. There are no criminal cases as of March 2019 found against anyone with that name in Maricopa Co Superior Court. The most recent news report, 12/4/2017 said “Police say the driver is a 17-year-old boy who they believe may have been under the influence. Charges are pending toxicology reports.”

The narrative is as concise as it is appalling:

Traffic unit #1 was southbound on South 19th avenue, driving left of the double-yellow no passing lane line and passing vehicles in the southbound travel Lanes of 19th avenue, when it veered left and left the roadway on the east side where it collided with traffic unit #2 (pedalcyclist) northbound on the sidewalk on the east side of 19th avenue. Following the collision with traffic unit #2, traffic unit number one collided with a power pole, fire hydrant and chain link fence.

…Witnesses said the vehicle was traveling south on 19th Avenue then crossed over the northbound lanes of 19th Avenue, striking the bicyclist while he was riding on the sidewalk, police said.

The driver, a 17-year-old boy, remained at the scene. Police said there were early indications that the driver showed signs of impairment. Police said charges are pending toxicology reports and reconstruction of the collision scene.
