Bicyclist dies after injuries in hit-run Prescott Valley crash

Aug 20, 2019 ~ 8PM. The crash occurred near the intersection of East Frontage Road and North Starlight Drive, Prescott Valley. There were no details on the manner of collision.

Hit and run, bicyclist suffered serious injuries and died several days later on Aug 26. The suspect driver was book on suspicion of aggravated assault, etc.; hinting the police believe the driver was impaired and caused the crash. Now that the victim has died, charges would presumably be upgraded to a homicide.



UPDATE: On Monday, August 26, 2019 at approximately 12:00 PM, the Prescott Valley Police Department was notified that the victim in this incident passed away at the Phoenix hospital where he was airlifted following the accident. The investigation is continuing as to any legal action against the suspect who was arrested in this case.

ORIGINAL: On Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at approximately 8:00PM, The Prescott Valley Police Department was notified of a man lying in the roadway next to a bicycle at the intersection of East Frontage and North Starlight Drive in Prescott Valley. Upon arrival, fire and ambulance personnel were tending to an unconscious man in the roadway.

Witnesses told the police that, although they did not see the accident, they observed a vehicle leaving the location at a high rate of speed and that the vehicle had front end damage and a broken windshield.

Investigation revealed that the collision occurred when the vehicle struck the bicyclist who was traveling in the same direction and then fled the area.

The bicyclist was 72 year old male, Dennis Steinbauer, whose injuries included severe head trauma and loss of consciousness. He was flown to John C. Lincoln Deer Valley where he remains in critical condition.

A short time after the incident Prescott Valley Officers were able to locate a white 1995 Honda Civic with front end damage that matched the evidence collected on scene. Brian Lee Benovsky, 49 year old male, was arrested and booked into YCSO Jail for three felony offenses: Hit and Run with Serious Physical Injury, Aggravated Assault, and Endangerment.

The police department acknowledges the value of cooperative witnesses who are willing to provide valuable information. Although situations occur quickly, observant and attentive onlookers are an important part of keeping our community safe.
