Bicyclist killed in Glendale crosswalk hit-and-run, suspect on the loose

This  showed up on review of the 2015 ASDM data, although I had missed it at the time…

11/19/2015 ~ 6:15pm. Bicyclist killed in the crosswalk by a hit-and-run driver. Bicyclist was northbound crosswalk at 43rd Ave and Bethany Home Road, Glendale, AZ.

The victim’s family found surveillance video in early December from an apt complex down the street of the suspect vehicle and turned it over to Glendale PD but so far, never found a suspect.

Crash Report

ADOT incident=3052080

Bicyclist NB in crosswalk; Driver faulted for DISREGARDING SIGNAL, the EB driver’s unit action was MAKING RIGHT.

This all implies the bicyclist was in the west crosswalk (i.e. going counter-flow), and the driver made a right-turn-on-red error.

This is a somewhat common/typical driver error and is one reason bicyclists are HEAVILY cautioned to not ride counterflow on sidewalks — drivers often only look to their left when turning right.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (KSAZ) – Police need help finding the driver of a van that struck and killed a bicyclist on Thursday.

Glendale police say the hit-and-run happened at 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road. The bicyclist, 42-year-old Dale Wensel, was in a cross walk when he was struck and killed by a white, full-size van. The driver of the truck left the scene… The van is described as a newer, full-size white van with dark tinted windows. It should also have front end damage as a result of the collision.
