Arizona Crash Facts 2025

Arizona persons killed in traffic crashes 2010-2025. Data source: ADOT

ADOT no longer releases a Crash Facts document, it’s been replaced by an annual “dashboard”. More on that later. In any event, the calendar year data becomes around the middle of the following year, so data for 2025 is now final.

Much has been said about the horrendous rise in moto-vehicle traffic dangerousness around the pandemic, it appears that it is continuing to revert, but has not yet reached, pre-pandemic levels which were definitely not great, see e.g. As global road deaths are falling, the U.S. is being left behind

The Data

Data source is ADOT’s ACIS, the Arizona Crash Information System.

Final 2025 for all person types and injury severities:

 Google Doc: injuriesByPersonType 2009-2025 (final)

Bicyclist fatalities are detailed in another google doc, there is a tab for each year, and an entry for each individual fatal with location, direction, crash manner, etc:

Google doc: ArizonaCyclistFatalities 2009-2025 (final)

For bicyclists there are two notable changes in the stats from previous year: the number of fatalities, 33, is significantly fewer that last year’s 44; and in fact the previous 4 years have all been mid-40s including an all-time historic high of 48 in 2022.

The other change was a sharp rise in the number of bicyclist injuries, 1632 compared with 1350 the prior year. I haven’t updated the city-by-city analysis since 2020 but that suggested some cities around 2014 changed their reporting resulting in fewer reported bicyle-MV crashes, maybe an update would shed some light on the change? Because it seems unlikely that number can float around so much; it feels more like a reporting change somewhere(?)

Of general interest, beginning in 2024 there’s a new PersonType called DRIVERLESS. As I try and think this through, it’s a little confusing… It all stems from UnitType, the only possibilities are DRIVER, PEDALCYCLIST, PEDESTRIAN or DRIVERLESS, the latter referring either to a parked vehicle (not “in transport” in the lingo) or even vehicle that rolled away, but nowadays also a fully autonomous vehicle. It appears as though an autonomous vehicle always has a person #1 who has no demographics (so age, sex, etc), but of course shows up in the person table as an entry. So, probably should NOT count DRIVERLESS persons in the total tally of motorists. It’s a relatively small number, of course (~ 5,000 of 250,000 persons / year). What I don’t understand and didn’t yet look up, is how were driverless units counted in years before 2024?

If anybody is looking for custom detailed extracts, for example, list all serious bicycle crashes, for the last 5 years,  in Scottsdale; or whatever, please let me know. Here’s an example of the type of data that can be found in  a collision report for a specific segment: Tempe, University Drive from Priest to approx. Mill Ave.

What about e-bikes?

Although e-bikes have been much in the news, there is no way with the  current Arizona Crash Report form to differentiate between a bicycle and an e-bike (more details about data collection), though this being actively worked, it will take years for an update to the form and for it to be filled out reliably.

Anecdotally, two (2/4/2025, and 6/29/2025) of the 33 fatalities where news reports stated there was an e-bike; that is denoted in the comments column in the fatal bicyclist google doc linked above. The only way to actually find out would be to read the (full) crash report’s narrative for clues, the narrative is NOT captured in the database, which is a gross shortcoming in the 21st century.

In that linked google doc, below the 33 documented bicyclist fatalities, there are some non-bicyclist fatalities listed with other devices: a motorized (gas-powered) bike,  a one-wheel, a mini-bike, and e-motorcycle. Note that the one-wheel (an electric personal mobility device) is considered a pedestrian.

Out with the old (Crash Facts) and in with the new (dashboard)

The old anchor link

azdot.gov/CrashFacts still works and redirects to

azdot.gov/planning/traffic-safety/arizona-motor-vehicle-crash-facts

the final thumbnail

For the curious, the existing annual Crash Facts seem to have been expunged from azdot’s site, but are still available (except I can find 2022?) via the internet archive’s wayback machine, e.g. here is the old Crash Fact landing page, and here is the .pdf for Crash Facts 2021:

In the injuriesByPersonType google doc linked above, the columns in blue text note some small discrepancies between the published figures (be they in the dashboard, or the annual crash facts document). I’m not sure how to resolve them.
