Friday April 10, 2015, early afternoon. Victim: Jameson Kennedy, 51/M. The driver told police “an animal ran out in front of him and the bicyclist on westbound McKellips Boulevard, causing the cyclist to swerve to the left. The driver swerved to the right, striking the cyclist from behind.”
The vehicle damage seems to be both on the left front corner and right side windshield indicating a very sharp swerve. The story seems to imply the animal wasn’t struck; i.e. the damage seen was due to striking the bicycle or bicyclist; though there seems to be minor damage also on the right front corner; though any of the damage could have been pre-existing.
It was mentioned on facebook the location on McKellips was between Ironwood and Meridian. This road in this area is one narrow lane in each direction w/no paved shoulder. I would have guessed this was Maricopa county, but it (just barely) in Pinal.
APACHE JUNCTION, AZ (KPHO/KTVK) – Authorities believe a dog or coyote in the road near Apache Junction caused a car to crash into a bicycle Friday, killing the bicyclist… Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said a 27-year-old Apache Junction man was driving his 6-year-old daughter home from school about 1:15 p.m. Friday. He said an animal ran out in front of him and the bicyclist on westbound McKellips Boulevard, causing the cyclist to swerve to the left. The driver swerved to the right, striking the cyclist from behind. The cyclist, Jameson Kennedy, 51, of Apache, landed on the vehicle and then the roadway, suffering severe injuries… PCSO said detectives do not believe either driver was impaired. Detectives reported seeing several animal tracks on the dirt shoulder of the rural area.
