Police: 1 killed in Phoenix drag-racing crash

A 17-year-ol

d is dead and another person is in critical condition after a traffic collision Sunday morning in Phoenix near Thomas Road and 47th Avenue, police said.

The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. when a 2001 Chevrolet Camaro lost control before striking the passenger side of a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox, according to Phoenix police spokesman Offficer James Holmes.

Police believe the 23-year-old man driving the Camaro was speeding when he began to spin and entered the eastbound lanes of traffic, Holmes said. Witnesses told police the Camaro had been racing another vehicle moments before the collision, Holmes said.

The 17-year-old passenger of the Camaro, identified as Jonathan Guardad, was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The driver, who was not identified, remained in critical condition Sunday afternoon, and his “survival is questionable,” Holmes said.

Immediately after the collision, all the occupants of the Equinox except the driver fled, grabbing beer from the vehicle as they left, Holmes said. One passenger was detained and booked into jail for an outstanding warrant, Holmes said. The other passengers had not been found.

The drivers of both the Equinox and the Camaro showed signs of impairment, police said. Police were monitoring the condition of the driver of the Camaro and could possibly bring homicide charges, Holmes said. The driver of the Equinox was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
