fatal incident 8/27/2016; This was reported in the media at the time but I had missed it.
Cyclist Thomas J. Butler 39/M; 43rd Ave, just north of Bethany Home Road. It’s not clear when police say things like “The bicyclist tried to ride across the street, not in a crosswalk”; and there are inconsistencies in the data file; unfortunately the crash report itself is unavailable from the given file number, so the world will never know:
Phoenix police: Bicyclist identified after being hit by suspected drunk driver
Max Walker
9:29 PM, Aug 27, 2016… The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Thomas J. Butler.
The bicyclist tried to ride across the street, not in a crosswalk, and was hit by the driver of a Chevrolet Tahoe…
The driver was arrested for suspected DUI, but has not been charged for the crash.
Crash Report
Phoenix file number 201601594751 -> 16001594751 No Match
So here is what ASDM says:
Dark (but time says 7:31p… I guess that’s right, sunset = 659p… another news report says time was ~ 830p at which time it would have been completely dark?)
Cyclist : NB 43rd Ave In roadway; faulted for “did not use crosswalk”(huh?). Positive drug result.
Motorist: NB 43rd Ave; “no improper”. Motorist PBT result 0.168 (> 0.15 is extreme DUI).
Both are in LANE_1, Northbound, going straight ahead. Which would make it sound like rear-end but that’s inconsistent with the news story.
The crash location is Not Intersection / Not Junction related, so the Did Not Use Crosswalk also makes no sense in that regard.
To make things more consistent, and assuming the news report is accurate, I think i would prefer the cyclist’s unit action to be coded as “CROSSING”.
And obviously, there’s no such behavior for cyclists as “did not use crosswalk”, should be FTY i guess.
My brother and best friend. He was and has always been a great cyclist ever since we began to ride the fields, ditches, washes and streets of Arizona as children. We would ride to relax, think, dream, transportation or just for the challenge from Tonapah to Mesa, Prescott to Tolleson. He is very very loved and missed.
