Off-duty Pima County Sheriff’s Deputy hit and thrown

This calls to mind a cyclist fatality in Pima County in 2009; Allen Johnson, an off-duty Tucson Police officer was killed by being rear-ended by an inexplicably distracted driver on the shoulder.

PIMA COUNTY – An off-duty Pima County Sheriff’s Deputy is lucky to be alive after he was hit by a car while riding his bike.

The crash happened Tuesday afternoon on Tanque Verde near Dusty Lane. Investigators say the 57-year-old was hit from behind in the bike lane. The Deputy was launched into the air during the impact and landed on the windshield and roof of the car.

His bike became trapped under the car. The bike was dragged for at least 100 feet while the Deputy was on the roof of the car. The car stopped and the driver stayed at the scene.

The incident is under investigation.

The Deputy suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries. He was wearing his helmet.
