hit and run in East Mesa; driver arrested

2/15/2021 ~ 4PM. Driver was sb on 98th St at Broadway Rd and failed to yield at a stop sign to a motorized bicyclist wb along Broadway. The motorized bicyclist sustained life-threatening injuries. The driver fled the scene, a neighbor recognized the car, and MSCO deputies made an arrest.

The address is Mesa, but is apparently unincorporated because it is being investigated by MSCO (Maricopa county Sheriff’s Office).

This suspect was  later booked into jail on one count of leaving the scene of an at fault traffic collision (presumably 28-661) , a serious felony.

It’s worth pointing out the suspect/driver lied. Drivers who do bad things tend to lie. As far as I’m aware there is no consequence for lying in this situation, so lie away.

Another point to mention is that motorized bicycle riders don’t count, statistically, as bicyclists; see here for more info

According to a news story “The victim, identified by his fiancé as Carlos, is in critical condition but is stable as of Feb. 21”.

Teen Arrested After Leaving the Scene Of Serious Hit And Run Accident  Post Date:02/16/2021
On February 15, 2021, just after 4pm, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office responded to emergency calls for service in reference to a vehicle accident. Witnesses reported a black vehicle traveling southbound on 98th Street at Broadway Road in Mesa, when it failed to yield from a stop sign and collided with a black motorized bicycle that was traveling westbound on Broadway Road.

The rider of the bicycle, a 55-year-old male, was ejected from the bicycle by the collision. The black vehicle fled the scene without stopping or returning to the scene. The 55-year-old male was transported from the scene to Banner Desert Hospital with a head injury that was life threatening.

MCSO Vehicular Crimes Detectives reviewed surveillance video from the accident and one of the neighbors advised detectives he recognized the car from the neighborhood. He told MCSO the vehicle is usually parked at a house near 97th Way and Birchfield Road.

Detectives drove to the area of 97th Way and Birchfield Road. Detectives located a black Chevrolet Cobalt with opaque plastic parked in the driveway of a residence. The damage profile is consistent with being involved in a car vs bicycle collision, in addition physical evidence recovered at the scene matched the vehicle that was located.

Detectives observed a female who was later identified as 19-year-old Haley Madison Dean exit the vehicle shortly after locating it. Haley initially made up a story about the damage to her car and eventually admitted she was driving at the time of the collision.

Haley was later booked into jail on one count of leaving the scene of an at fault traffic collision.
