PHOENIX (CBS5) –
Phoenix police have identified two of three people killed in a head-on collision caused by customers fleeing from a Phoenix restaurant where they failed to pay their tab Thursday night.Valerie Cervantez, 26, and an unidentified man with her, had walked out of the restaurant about 9 p.m. Thursday and got into an argument in the parking lot, Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump said.
Restaurant employees went out to the lot to collect their money when both suspects got into a black Chevrolet Camaro and sped south on 75th Avenue from McDowell Road, Crump said.
Shortly after, a 911 call reported a couple fighting inside a car of the same description speeding on 75th Avenue near Lower Buckeye Road, Crump said. Officers began to give chase, but backed off as the suspects’ car reached a dangerous rate of speed while a police helicopter continued to follow the suspects, Crump said. The suspects turned and sped north on 67th Avenue and through the intersection of Van Buren Street before the driver lost control, crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Lincoln Town Car driven by 31-year-old Sylvester Romero, of Phoenix, Crump said. Police said Cervantez was driving the Camaro and that the man who was with her was ejected from the car. Cervantez was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries but died Sunday afternoon, Crump said. Romero was returning home from work, Crump said.
