I don’t normally like to comment on these far-afield stories but this one is particularly crazy.
It seems that 92-year-old Clifford Allen was convicted of his second DUI (second within six years, one wonders if there are more?) this triggers some sort of mandatory sentence and landed him in the county lockup, when some sort of residential rehab fell through.
This offended his son — I will repeat some of his views here:
“They say there isn’t enough jail space for criminals, yet my father who hasn’t hurt anyone is wearing black and white stripes,”
“He can’t walk. He can’t find his way out of a restaurant. He needs around the clock care. He’s not a menace to anybody,” Robert Allen said earlier today.
And according to the news accounts: He suffers from dementia…
News flash: drunk drivers ARE criminals.
The real question is why is he driving sober or drunk?
There is also a lot of dis or misinformation about “dangerous” criminals being let out of jail; due to an overcrowding situation. Jail is not the same thing as prison. Prison is where the convicted serious criminals go. Jail is where petty criminals, or those awaiting trial who can’t for whatever reason get out on bail (remember, we’re all innocent until proven guilty). Here’s a good explanation of the two terms.
News stories #1 , #2, #3, the AP also picked it up, it ran in USA Today.
