(source: google maps; retrieved 1/20/2012; street view is undated) Scene of two 2009 Tucson-area (but not in the city) fatalities: top -- Allen Johnson, killed on the shoulder EB on Old Spanish Trail, just west of S Camino Loma Alta. Note the W11-1 sign, and the W16-1P "share the road" placard (yellow / warning). bottom -- Jerome Featherman, killed in the bike lane of North Desert Bell Drive, near West Calle de Oro. This appears to be a full-up, real, normal, marked, designated bike lane; has the "old" markings and signage. In both cases; a motorist inexplicably (inattention? distraction?) drove out of the lane and struck the cyclist on the shoulder, or bike lane -- a grim reminder that an edge line or bike lane stripe can't protect cyclists from a careless motorist. Both were cited for 28-735. more details about these two fatalities. Note that these are the approximate locations; meant to be reprentative of road conditions and layout; not specific. FARS has very specific GIS info. | ![]() |
