Phoenix double hit and run

[update 4/11/2013 “Phoenix police announced Thursday that 30-year-old Christopher Forrest has been booked into jail on suspicion of leaving the scene of a fatal traffic collision” ]

Bicyclist 47-year-old Angel Hernandez-Sotelo was struck 3/8/2013 9pm, apparently while attempting to cross mid-block near 7th St/Roeser Phx by TWO vehicles; and BOTH hit-and-ran. One of the vehicle is said to be a “rental car” (should be easy to find who rented it??) and is seen on video surveillance cameras with a smashed windshield nearby where the driver left the vehicle and fled on foot.

The article didn’t say on which street the collision ocurred; 7th Street is the more-major of the two, it has two lanes in each direction (plus turn lane); while Roeser is only one lane. Speeds on 7th are generally higher.

Bicyclist dies after hit by 2 vehicles in Phoenix; both cars fled scene

PHOENIX – Phoenix police say two vehicles hit a bicyclist Friday night, and they both fled the scene.
According to Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos, officers were called out just before 9 p.m. to the area of 7th Street and Roeser for a pedestrian hit by a vehicle. Officers then found the victim, 47-year-old Angel Hernandez-Sotelo, with severe lower body trauma. He died at the scene, Martos said. Police learned that Hernandez-Sotelo was crossing the road mid-block on a bicycle at the time of the crash. The first vehicle that hit the bicyclist was a Ford Taurus going northbound on 7th Street, Martos said. That driver reportedly parked at a liquor store on the northeast corner of 7th Street and Roeser and ran away from the car.

Video from the scene showed the parked vehicle with a smashed windshield. The Ford is a rental car, and investigators are following up on this information. …Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call Phoenix police at 602-262-6141 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS. You can also call 480-TESTIGO for Spanish.

ASDM incident 2725483.

FARS case 40171 indicates victim’s ALC_RES was 28. The other two drivers, of course, weren’t tested because it was hit(s) and run.

Oddities: the FARS does not have Lat/Long coordinates or TWAY_ID2 (Roeser Rd), why not? they are in the asdm. It is one of only two AZ fatalities that don’t have valid GIS coordinates.
