Parade of wrong-way drivers continues

The parade of wrong-way drivers suspected of being impaired continues in full force. So far, none of the drivers involved in the spate of fatalities in early 2014 have come to trial yet (one is dead, one remains hospitalized, and one has been charged and pleaded not guilty); though the wrong-way impaired driver that caused an Oct 2013 fatality has plead no contest to 2nd degree murder charges.

Loop 101 wrong-way driver suspected of extreme DUI

…Cheyenne Wheeler was taken into custody at the Desert Rest Motel in the area of Apache Boulevard and Rural Road about 2:30 a.m. on suspicion of endangerment and extreme DUI, said Bart Graves of the Arizona Department of Public Safety… A black Hyundai Elantra was spotted going the wrong way in the northbound lanes on Loop 101 at McDowell Road about 2:15 a.m. As a Department of Public Safety officer followed, the car got off the freeway at Broadway Road… Investigators said Wheeler ditched her vehicle and tried to get away on foot… Graves said Wheeler’s initial blood-alcohol content was greater than 0.15 percent, nearly double the state’s legal limit. —

DPS said the driver was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes on the Loop 101… According to DPS, the car had no headlights on and officials believe impairment may have been a factor… —
